Jonathan Maguire has built his career around helping people through some of life’s most difficult moments. A Boston native and one of six brothers, Jonathan brings a grounded, approachable perspective to every client relationship. He understands that facing a legal matter can feel overwhelming, and he works to ensure clients feel heard, supported, and confident in the path forward.
Jonathan handles divorce, time-sharing, child support and relocation matters, and he is the firm’s criminal defense attorney. The two practices overlap more often than people expect: a domestic violence charge and an injunction arising from the same night, a DUI that affects a time-sharing case, a probation condition that conflicts with a parenting plan. Clients in that position get an attorney who understands both courtrooms.
Before becoming an attorney, Jonathan earned a culinary arts degree from Southern New Hampshire University and owned his own restaurant. His love of cooking continues today, along with the practical, people-first mindset he developed through that experience.
After graduating from Florida Coastal School of Law in 2011, Jonathan served for six years as an Assistant State Attorney in Florida’s Sixth Circuit. He tried cases ranging from misdemeanors to first-degree felonies punishable by life, and spent two and a half years as Pasco County’s dedicated prosecutor for child abuse and child sex crimes. That work strengthened his commitment to protecting vulnerable people and advocating with compassion, preparation and resolve.
In 2020, Jonathan joined Erin Catey to form Catey & Maguire Law. Together, the firm’s attorneys take a collaborative approach, drawing on their combined experience to thoughtfully evaluate each case, develop a strategy tailored to the client, and provide steady guidance from beginning to end. Clients benefit from having a team that is accessible, prepared, and genuinely invested in helping them move forward.
A former prosecutor knows firsthand how the state builds a case, what evidence carries weight with a jury, and where the prosecution’s argument is likely to be weak. Because Jonathan spent those years on the other side of the courtroom, as a felony trial attorney and as a child abuse and sex crimes prosecutor, he can anticipate the state’s strategy rather than react to it. That is the basis of his defense work, and it also informs his family law practice when a criminal charge and a family case arise from the same events.
He is also a licensed Florida real estate agent, which is useful in divorces where the marital home is the largest asset.
Jonathan represents clients throughout the Tampa Bay area: Pasco County (New Port Richey, Dade City and Zephyrhills), Pinellas County (Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Largo), Hillsborough County (Tampa, Brandon and Plant City) and Hernando County (Brooksville and Spring Hill).
Outside the courtroom, Jonathan’s world revolves around family. He is married to Diane, a practicing paralegal, and together they can often be found cheering on his child, to whom Diane is a loving bonus mom, at a tennis match or basketball game. When they are not traveling for tournaments, they enjoy spending time near the water and exploring new corners of the country.
